Mirror panel: layout, bevel and installation
How to design a mirror panel: layout types (diamonds, honeycomb, straight), 5–20 mm bevel, mirror type, mounting methods and wall prep. Tables and tips from REAL GLASS.
A mirror panel is a wall assembled from bevelled mirror segments. It visually doubles the space, fills a room with light and works as full décor for a living room, hallway or dining zone. But the result depends entirely on three things: the layout, the bevel and the quality of the installation. Let's look at how to design a panel properly. By Armen Arutyunyan, co-owner of REAL GLASS, glass-construction design engineer, 12 years of experience.
01What a mirror panel is
Unlike a single mirror, a panel is assembled from individual tile-segments. Between them runs a thin seam, and each segment has a bevel (a chamfered edge) that catches light and gives the characteristic "facet" sparkle. It's the bevel that turns a set of mirrors into a premium decorative element.
02Layout types
| Layout | Effect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Diamonds | Classic, dynamic, "diamond" shine | Living room, hallway, dining |
| Honeycomb (hexagon) | Modern geometric accent | Loft, minimalism |
| Straight squares/rectangles | Calm grid | Restrained interior |
| Horizontal bands | Visually widens the wall | Narrow hallways |
| Custom by sketch | Unique pattern | Design project |
Segment size shapes the effect: small diamonds (15–20 cm) give a rich shine, large ones (30–40 cm) are calmer with fewer seams.
03Bevel: 5, 10 or 20 mm
| Bevel width | Look | When to choose |
|---|---|---|
| 5 mm | Thin, neat edge | Restrained, modern |
| 10 mm | Pronounced shine, the sweet spot | Universal for panels |
| 20 mm | Deep "crystal" edge | Classic, premium, diamonds |
The wider the bevel, the stronger the play of light and the more each segment stands out. Classic diamonds use 10–20 mm, strict geometry 5–10 mm.
04Mirror type
- Silver (clear). Classic bright reflection.
- Graphite / bronze. Tinted mirror for a muted, premium effect — less reflective "punch", good for large walls.
- Antique. Decorative patina for lofts and bars.
All mirrors are made with a CuOH-free coating — no copper or lead, it won't darken from moisture and is EU-compliant. That matters in wet zones.
05Wall prep and installation
The main requirement for a panel is a flat wall. If the base "moves", segments won't align and seams will drift — clearly visible on large panels. So we level the wall first. Mounting methods:
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| Mirror adhesive | Hidden, for a flat, solid base |
| Adhesive + safety profile | For large, heavy panels |
| On a hidden frame | When the wall can't be loaded / needs access |
We measure the wall, prepare an exact layout (a drawing with the size of each segment), cut on our own line and install ourselves with a precise seam.
06Where it works and where it doesn't
- Works: an accent wall in a living room, a hallway (widens a narrow space), a dining zone, a bar, a loft.
- With caution: opposite a bright window — lots of glare; in a bedroom facing the bed — a matter of taste.
07Panel, single mirror or mirror tile
| Solution | Look | When to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Bevelled mirror panel | Premium décor, facet play | Accent wall, living room, hallway |
| Single mirror | Clean reflection, no seams | Dressing room, fitting, full-height |
| Mirror tile without bevel | Budget, simple grid | Utility zones, economy |
A panel is chosen for the decorative effect: bevel and layout turn the wall into an art object. If you just need "to see yourself", a single mirror is more practical.
08Segment size and perception
Small 15–20 cm diamonds give a rich "diamond" shine but visually fragment the wall and glare more. Large 30–40 cm segments are calmer, with fewer seams and easier care. Go larger for a big wall, smaller for an accent insert.
09Mirror colour for the interior
- Silver — bright neutral reflection, classic, light interiors.
- Graphite — mutes the reflection, a restrained premium look, for dark and modern interiors.
- Bronze — a warm tone, pairs well with wood and brass.
- Antique — a patina finish for lofts and bars.
You can mix tones in one panel, but a single tone usually wins — the composition looks more cohesive.
10Where to place a panel
| Room | Effect |
|---|---|
| Hallway | Widens a narrow space, adds light |
| Living room | Accent wall behind a sofa or TV zone |
| Dining | Increases volume, striking with a chandelier |
| Loft / bar | Antique panel with graphite — a signature texture |
11How long a mirror panel lasts
A quality mirror with a CuOH-free coating lasts for decades and won't darken from moisture. The key is a protected edge: the bevel and edge finishing stop corrosion creeping in from the edges. With careful care a panel keeps its look without the darkening and "black" corner spots that cheap mirrors suffer.
12Safety
For impact-prone areas we apply an anti-shatter film to the back of the segments — fragments stay in place if damaged. This matters for panels in busy spots and homes with children.
13Lead time and installation
We make and install a mirror panel turnkey; the time depends on area and layout complexity. The wall measure across St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast is free, and we agree the layout in advance from a drawing.
14Bottom line
A successful mirror panel is a layout designed for the wall size, the right bevel and a flat base. REAL GLASS makes mirror panels to order in St. Petersburg: diamonds, honeycomb, straight and custom layouts, a 5–20 mm bevel, silver, bronze or antique.
