LED-backlit bathroom mirror: what to check before buying

Not all 'backlit mirrors' are equal. Backlight type, colour temperature, IP rating, demister, serviceability.

Backlit bathroom mirrors look identical in photos. In practice the difference between a 9 800 ₽ model and a 38 000 ₽ one is light quality, moisture protection and lifespan. Two years in, the cheap one fails; the proper one runs 10+ years.

01What to check

Colour temperature

3000K — warm, for relaxation. 4000K — neutral, best for makeup (true skin tones). 5000–6000K — cold, surgical, not residential.

A good mirror has dimming and temperature switching via touch.

IP rating

Bathroom minimum is IP44 (splash protection). Office-grade IP20 mirrors = short circuit waiting to happen.

Demister

50–80 W film heater on the back. Activates with the light or via humidity sensor. Without it, the mirror fogs for 5–10 minutes after a shower.

Serviceability

Quality mirror has the driver behind the wall, not built into the frame. When it fails, swap the driver (1 500 ₽) in 20 minutes, not the whole mirror.

CuOH-free silver coating (no copper, no lead) — EU standard since 2010. Doesn't darken in damp bathrooms, eco-compliant. 8–12% more expensive, get it.
