UV bonding: what it is and where it's used

Polymer, ultraviolet, 0.2 mm seam. The tech that replaced silicone in premium segments. Where it's critical and where it's overspend.

Silicone is "stick it with adhesive." UV bonding is "weld it with polymer." Twenty-five years of engineering separate them, with only a 15–20% price gap — but the aesthetics and durability are on different planets.

01The physics

A clear photopolymer (Loctite 350 or Bohle VERIFIX) is applied between two glass panels. 0.1–0.3 mm layer. A 365 nm UV lamp cures the seam in 30–60 seconds — the polymer bonds with glass at molecular level.

Result: up to 35 MPa tensile strength. That's stronger than the glass itself in tension. The seam is tougher than the material it joins.

02Where it's critical

Aquariums

Silicone yellows in 2 years, leaving "6+5 mm glass + yellow 4 mm seams." UV bonding stays clear for decades. 0.2 mm seam is essentially invisible.

Boutique and museum vitrines

Glass case for watches, jewellery, artefacts. With metal corners it's "packaging." With a UV seam it's the exhibit itself.

Custom showers without vertical clamps

All-glass construction with no vertical metal profiles. UV-bonded glass joints create a seamless "endless" wall.
