Smart Glass: when it's worth it and when it's a waste
PDLC glass switches between clear and opaque on a button press. The price stings. Where it actually delivers value, and where it's a quarter-million toy.
Smart Glass is a PDLC film between two glass layers. No voltage — opaque. 60 V applied — transparent. The tech isn't new (industrial since 2008), but only hit mass market when price dropped below 40 000 ₽/m².
01Where Smart Glass pays off
Class A office meeting rooms
Wall is transparent — office feels open. Sensitive meeting starts — button makes it opaque. Roller blinds destroy the open-space look; this preserves it.
Cosmetology or therapy room
Between waiting area and consultation room. Transparent — client sees they're not forgotten. Opaque — session.
Bedroom-bathroom wall
Glass shower wall opens into the bedroom. Not in use — transparent, visually doubles the room. In use — opaque.
02Where it's overspend
- Executive office walls — 90% of the time opaque, satin film is cheaper
- Street-facing windows — privacy films or blinds cost less
- Showers invisible from living areas — regular frosted works at 8 000 ₽/m² vs 38 000+ ₽/m²

04What to watch
Power: ~5 W/m². 8 h/day on a 10 m² partition = 50–80 ₽/month of electricity. Negligible.
Viewing angle: in clear mode, a slight haze appears at sharp angles. Head-on — invisible.
Film life: 100 000 switch cycles ≈ 15 years at 20 switches/day. Glass itself is forever, only the film gets replaced.
If full-wall Smart Glass blows the budget, only do it where privacy matters (e.g. 1 of 3 sections), rest stays transparent.
