01What the code says
SP 118-13330 mandates 900 mm minimum for residential, 1100 mm for public spaces. Top handrail isn't required — the code requires a "barrier," not "with a handrail." Inspectors check height, glass strength, mounting, gaps. Without handrail — allowed if everything else is to code.

Rule: "no handrail" isn't "cheaper," it's an aesthetic declaration. Skip the rail only if it transforms the space and the household doesn't need grip support.
