Hollywood makeup mirror: bulbs, light and sizes

How to choose a makeup mirror: number and type of bulbs, light temperature, sizes for salon and home, power and safety. Tables by size and light temperature from REAL GLASS.

A Hollywood makeup mirror with bulbs around the frame gives bright, even, shadow-free light — which is why it's chosen by makeup artists, beauty salons, photo studios and, increasingly, ordinary flats. But "bulbs around the edge" is only half the story: the number of bulbs, light temperature, mirror size and proper power supply all matter. Let's go point by point. By Armen Arutyunyan, co-owner of REAL GLASS, glass-construction design engineer, 12 years of experience.

01Why Hollywood light is better for makeup

Bulbs set around the whole perimeter light the face from every side and remove the shadows under the eyes, nose and chin — the very ones that make makeup "in home light" look different from daylight. That's the key difference from an ordinary mirror with a single light strip, where light comes from one side and shadows remain.

02How many bulbs you need

The bulb count depends on the mirror's perimeter: the larger the mirror, the more bulbs for even light. Ballpark:

Mirror sizeBulbs (approx.)Use
60×50 cm8–10Desktop, home
80×60 cm10–12Wall, home/MUA
100×70 cm12–14Salon, workstation
Full-height (170×60)14–18Studio, bloggers, fitting room

It's not only the number but the bulb spacing: too wide a gap creates dark spots. At the measure we calculate the spacing for even light at your exact size.

03Which light to choose: temperature

TemperatureWhat it looks likeWhen to choose
3000KWarm, yellowishCosy interior, evening makeup
4000KNeutral whiteUniversal: doesn't distort skin tone — best for makeup
5000–6000KCool, daylightStudio, detail work, content

For most tasks people pick neutral 4000K — cosmetics read true under it. The ideal is bulbs with adjustable temperature (warm/neutral/cool) plus a brightness dimmer: one mirror for any task.

04Bulb types

  • LED "globes" (G45). The classic Hollywood look, warm or neutral light, low power draw.
  • LED strip in a matte channel. A modern continuous contour without separate "bulbs", more even.
  • Combined. A bulb contour plus background light for softness.

05Size and format for the task

06Power and safety

A makeup mirror connects to 220 V mains via a driver (power supply) that steps voltage down for the LEDs — the bulbs themselves are low-voltage and safe. For a bathroom you need an IP rating of at least IP44 and a connection via an RCD. We route the cable into the wall during renovation or neatly outside. On request we add a touch switch and an anti-fog demister — handy in a bathroom.

08Sensor, dimmer, demister — what you really need

  • Dimmer — almost always: different brightness for day and evening.
  • Temperature control — very useful: one mirror for makeup, content and ambience.
  • Touch switch — convenient, especially in a bathroom.
  • Demister (anti-fog) — only needed in a wet area.
  • USB or socket in the mirror — for a hairdryer, curling iron, charging.

09Mounting: wall or floor

We hang a wall mirror on a secure hidden mount sized for its weight — a large mirror with a frame and bulbs is heavy. A full-height floor model gets a stable rest or a wall anchor against tipping, especially in a home with kids. The power point is planned in advance, the cable hidden in the wall during renovation.

10Mounting height

Ideally hang the mirror so its centre is at eye level: for a vanity table, a seated person; for a wall beauty mirror, that usually means the bottom edge at 100–110 cm from the floor. We'll advise the exact height at the measure for your scenario.

11For bloggers and content

If the mirror is for video and photo, go for a large size (full-height), neutral-cool light 4500–5000K and a maximally even contour without gaps. The bulbs must not flicker on camera — that depends on driver quality. A frameless mirror with an LED contour looks cleaner in frame than separate "bulbs".

12FAQ

Can a Hollywood mirror go in a bathroom? Yes, but you need IP44 or higher, an RCD connection and ideally an anti-fog demister. We make such models specifically for wet zones.

What if a bulb fails? LED bulbs last 15,000–30,000 hours and are replaced one at a time — no need to change the whole mirror. We use standard sockets so replacement is simple.

Does the mirror get hot? No. Modern LEDs give off almost no heat, unlike old incandescent bulbs, so the surface stays comfortable.

13Lead time
