"Glass splashback will crack over a gas hob" — most common myth. The right glass holds up to 300 °C and hundreds of heat cycles. Here's what "right" means.
01Tempered only
Standard (annealed) glass cracks within a week over gas — thermal shock from burner-edge gradient. Only tempered survives. Minimum 8 mm (not 6).
02Heat physics
Tempered glass has internal stress from the heat-treatment. Direct burner heat causes expansion, but the strength margin handles up to 300 °C without breaking. Glass-transition point ≈ 350 °C, so there's a 50 °C safety margin.
03What NOT to do
- Thin 6 mm — even tempered, gas-burner load exceeds strength margin
- Laminated (PVB film softens at 150 °C) — electric/induction only
- Clear glass without back coating — soot darkens the back fast
- UV-printed area directly above the burner — inks can darken
