5 mistakes when ordering an office glass partition
What typically goes wrong: acoustics, measuring before finishes, wrong glass thickness, film vs sandblasting. Real cases from St. Petersburg projects.
I've seen these mistakes hundreds of times — in fresh Class A office buildings and in renovated lofts. They all cost money and weeks of downtime: redoing a partition isn't swapping a film, it's dismantling the system and waiting 2–3 weeks for new glass.
011. "8 mm is fine, why pay for 10"
Tempered 10 mm absorbs point impacts (think furniture being moved). 8 mm works up to 2.5 m ceiling; in lofts with 3+ m ceilings it flexes. Cost difference for a 30 m² office — about 18 000 ₽. Cost of redoing — 90 000 ₽ plus three weeks of disruption.
022. Measuring before finishes
Client wants to save time and measure during renovation. A month later: +18 mm laminate, +5 mm finishing plaster. The partition is now 23 mm too tall. Visible 20 mm shims ruin the look.
Rule: measure only after walls, floors and ceilings are finished.
033. Film instead of sandblasting for privacy
ORACAL 8500 film lasts 7–10 years. It yellows under UV through windows and peels at edges. Sandblasting is forever, doesn't wear or fade. Difference on 30 m² — about 12 000 ₽. You'll replace the film anyway in 5 years.
| Technology | Lifespan | Price per m² |
|---|---|---|
| ORACAL film | 7–10 years | from 1 200 ₽ |
| CNC sandblast | forever | from 1 800 ₽ |
| Laser engraving | forever | from 2 400 ₽ |
| UV print | 10–15 years | from 2 800 ₽ |
044. Ignoring meeting-room acoustics
Single 10 mm gives 32 dB — conversation through the wall is still intelligible. For meeting rooms with numbers, use 8+8 laminated (38 dB) or double glazing with air cavity (42 dB). Cost delta — 5 000–7 000 ₽/m².
Quick check: stand on either side of your current wall and whisper numbers. If you understand them, you need above-baseline acoustic insulation.
055. "We'll add the door later as a separate order"
A door ordered separately two months later means a new measure, new profile, visible seam at the junction. Costs 30–40% more and looks worse. Plan the door at the partition design stage.
